Active learning, such as through hands-on activities, has been proven to be effective in the teaching-learning process. Hands-on activities can be used to introduce new ideas or clarify puzzling topics with which students typically struggle. If the result of an experiment is surprising yet convincing, students are in a position to build ownership of the new idea and use it to scaffold learning. Students of Grade VII engaged themselves in balancing chemical reactions using a yardstick kit during the Science period. They used the kit to its fullest to determine the valency of an element and also to write the chemical formulae of compounds. This activity helped to strengthen the theoretical concepts and develop critical thinking skills within the learners. ""
